[88] Bhikkhus, an elder (thera) bhikkhu possessing five qualities is practicing for the harm of many people, for the unhappiness of many people, for the ruin, harm, and suffering of many people — of devas and humans. Which five? He is an elder of long standing (rattaññū), long gone forth; he is well known and famous, with a large retinue of many people among laypeople and those gone forth; he is a gainer of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick; he is one of great learning, a bearer of what he has heard, an accumulator of what he has heard … well penetrated by view. He is one of wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi), with distorted vision. He draws many people away from the true Dhamma (saddhamma) and establishes them in what is not the true Dhamma. Thinking, "The elder bhikkhu is of long standing, long gone forth," they follow his example (diṭṭhānugati). Thinking, "The elder bhikkhu is well known and famous, with a large retinue of many people among laypeople and those gone forth," they follow his example. Thinking, "The elder bhikkhu is a gainer of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick," they follow his example. Thinking, "The elder bhikkhu is one of great learning, a bearer of what he has heard, an accumulator of what he has heard," they follow his example. He is one of right view (sammādiṭṭhi), with undistorted vision. He draws many people away from what is not the true Dhamma and establishes them in the true Dhamma.
