[94] Bhikkhus, there are these five comfortable abidings (phāsuvihāra). What five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and dwells in the first jhāna; with the stilling of thought (vitakka) and discursive examination (vicāra) … he enters and dwells in the second jhāna; with the fading away of rapture … he enters and dwells in the third jhāna; with the abandonment of pleasure … he enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna; and with the destruction of the taints (āsava), he realizes for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and having entered upon it, he dwells therein. These, bhikkhus, are the five comfortable abidings.
