[1] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus." "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:
"Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of seven qualities is not dear to his fellows in the holy life, not agreeable, not respected, and not esteemed. What seven? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is desirous of gain, desirous of honor, desirous of not being disparaged; he is without shame (ahirika) and without moral dread (anottappa); he has evil desires and wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi). A bhikkhu possessed of these seven qualities, bhikkhus, is not dear to his fellows in the holy life, not agreeable, not respected, and not esteemed.
"Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of seven qualities is dear to his fellows in the holy life, agreeable, respected, and esteemed. What seven? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not desirous of gain, not desirous of honor, not desirous of not being disparaged; he has shame (hirī) and moral dread (ottappa); he is of few wishes and holds right view (sammādiṭṭhi). A bhikkhu possessed of these seven qualities, bhikkhus, is dear to his fellows in the holy life, agreeable, respected, and esteemed."
