[127] Bhikkhus, there are these eight gifts of a good man (sappurisadāna). What eight? He gives what is pure; he gives what is excellent; he gives at the proper time; he gives what is allowable; he gives having chosen with care; he gives repeatedly; while giving, he makes the mind (citta) serene; having given, he is glad. These, bhikkhus, are the eight gifts of a good man.
Pure, excellent, timely, and allowable
drink and food he gives repeatedly as gifts
to those living the holy life, who are good fields of merit;
having relinquished much material wealth, he feels no remorse.
Gifts given in this way those of insight praise.
Having thus made his offering, the wise one, endowed with faith,
with a mind released, the sage
is reborn in the untroubled, happy world.
