[150] [60] Bhikkhus, these eight persons are worthy of gifts (āhuneyyā) … the incomparable field of merit for the world. Which eight? The Stream-Enterer, the one practising for the realization of the fruition of Stream-Entry; the Once-Returner, the one practising for the realization of the fruition of Once-Returning; the Non-Returner, the one practising for the realization of the fruition of Non-Returning; the Arahant, the one practising for Arahantship. These, bhikkhus, are the eight persons worthy of gifts … the incomparable field of merit for the world.
Four who are practising, and four established in the fruits —
this is the Saṅgha, exalted: eight persons among beings.
For humans who offer sacrifice, for living beings seeking merit,
who make merit that ripens in acquisitions (opadhika),
what is given here bears great fruit.
