[178] [88] "Friends, a bhikkhu possessed of four qualities is capable of benefiting others, but not himself. What four? Here, friends, (1) a bhikkhu is one of quick apprehension (khippanisanti) of wholesome dhammas; and (2) he is one who retains the dhammas he has heard; but he is not one who examines the meaning of the dhammas retained, nor one who, having understood the meaning and understood the dhamma, practises in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammapaṭipanna); and (3) he is one of lovely speech … ; and (4) he is one who instructs … his companions in the holy life. Possessed of these four qualities, friends, a bhikkhu is capable of benefiting others, but not himself."
