[177] Friends, a bhikkhu possessing four qualities is competent to benefit himself but not others. Which four? Here, friends, a bhikkhu is quick in grasping wholesome teachings (dhammas); he is by nature one who retains the teachings he has heard; he is one who examines the meaning of the teachings he has retained; and, having understood the meaning and understood the teaching, he practises in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammapaṭipanna). But he is not one of lovely and convincing speech (kalyāṇavāca) … nor is he one who instructs … his fellows in the holy life (sabrahmacārī). Possessing these four qualities, friends, a bhikkhu is competent to benefit himself but not others.
