[180] [90] Friends, possessing three qualities a bhikkhu is sufficient for others but not for himself. Which three? Here, friends, (1) a bhikkhu is not quick in grasping wholesome dhammas, yet he is by nature one who retains the teachings he has heard; (2) he is not one who examines the meaning of the teachings retained, nor one who, having understood the meaning and understood the Dhamma, practises in accordance with the Dhamma, yet he is of lovely speech … [with speech] making the meaning known; (3) and he is one who demonstrates … to his companions in the holy life. Possessing these three qualities, friends, a bhikkhu is sufficient for others but not for himself.
