[181] Friends, a bhikkhu endowed with two qualities is capable in regard to himself, but not in regard to others. What two? Here, friends, a bhikkhu is neither quick in grasping (khippanisanti) wholesome dhammas, nor is he of the sort who retains the dhammas he has heard; but he is one who examines the meaning of the dhammas he has retained, and, having understood the meaning and understood the dhamma, he is one who practises in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammapaṭipanna); and he is not of lovely speech … nor is he one who instructs … his companions in the holy life (sabrahmacārī). Endowed with these two qualities, friends, a bhikkhu is capable in regard to himself, but not in regard to others.
