[212] 8. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, on Mount Gijjhakūṭa. Then Sajjha the wanderer approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Sajjha the wanderer said this to the Blessed One: "Bhante, on one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling right here in Rājagaha, at Giribbaja. There, Bhante, I heard this in the Blessed One's presence, I learned it in his presence: 'Sajjha, a bhikkhu who is an arahant, whose taints (āsava) are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters (saṃyojana) of existence, and is liberated through final knowledge — he is incapable of transgressing in five cases: a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of intentionally depriving a living being of life; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of taking what is not given, that which is reckoned as theft; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of engaging in sexual intercourse; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of knowingly speaking falsehood; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of storing things up in order to enjoy sensual pleasures, as he did formerly when a householder.' Bhante, was this well heard by me from the Blessed One, well learned, well attended to, well retained in mind?"
"Assuredly, Sajjha, this was well heard by you, well learned, well attended to, well retained in mind. Formerly, Sajjha, and now too I say thus: a bhikkhu who is an arahant, whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, and is liberated through final knowledge — he is incapable of transgressing in nine cases: a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of intentionally depriving a living being of life; … a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of storing things up in order to enjoy sensual pleasures, as he did formerly when a householder; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of repudiating the Buddha; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of repudiating the Dhamma; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of repudiating the Saṅgha; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of repudiating the training. Formerly, Sajjha, and now too I say thus: a bhikkhu who is an arahant, whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, and is liberated through final knowledge — he is incapable of transgressing in these nine cases."
