[267] Bhikkhus, there are these five weaknesses in the training (sikkhādubbalya). What five? The destruction of life (pāṇātipāta), taking what is not given (adinnādāna), misconduct in sensual pleasures (kāmesu micchācāra), false speech (musāvāda), and indulgence in liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness (surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāna). These, bhikkhus, are the five weaknesses in the training.
For the abandonment of these five weaknesses in the training, bhikkhus, the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) should be developed. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings … the mind (citta) in the mind … dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. For the abandonment of these five weaknesses in the training, bhikkhus, these four establishments of mindfulness should be developed.
