[269] Bhikkhus, there are these five cords of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa). What five? Forms cognizable by the eye that are wished for, desired, agreeable, endearing, connected with sensuality, enticing to lust; sounds cognizable by the ear …; odours cognizable by the nose …; tastes cognizable by the tongue …; tangibles cognizable by the body that are wished for, desired, agreeable, endearing, connected with sensuality, enticing to lust. These, bhikkhus, are the five cords of sensual pleasure.
Bhikkhus, for the abandoning of these five cords of sensual pleasure … these four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) should be developed.
