[280] 76. Bhikkhus, there are these five bonds of the mind (cetaso vinibandhā). What five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for sensual pleasures … These, bhikkhus, are the five bonds of the mind.
For the abandoning of these five bonds of the mind, bhikkhus, these four bases for success (iddhipāda) should be developed. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the basis for success endowed with concentration (samādhi) due to zeal (chanda) and volitional formations of striving; he develops the basis for success endowed with concentration due to energy … concentration due to mind (citta) … concentration due to investigation (vīmaṃsā) and volitional formations of striving. For the abandoning of these five bonds of the mind, bhikkhus, these four bases for success should be developed.
The Fourth Chapter, on the Bases for Success (Iddhipāda-vagga), is finished.
(Summary verse:)
