[283] (79) Bhikkhus, for the full understanding of lust (rāga), for its utter destruction, for its abandoning, for its destruction, for its vanishing, for its fading away, for its cessation (nirodha), for its giving up, for its relinquishment, these nine things are to be developed. For the direct knowledge (abhiññā) of hatred (dosa), of delusion (moha), of anger (kodha), of resentment (upanāha), of denigration (makkha), of domineering (palāsa), of envy (issā), of miserliness (macchariya), of deceit (māyā), of hypocrisy (sātheyya), of obstinacy (thambha), of presumption (sārambha), of conceit (māna), of arrogance (atimāna), of vanity (mada), and of heedlessness (pamāda); for their full understanding, for their utter destruction, for their abandoning, for their destruction, for their vanishing, for their fading away, for their cessation, for their giving up, for their relinquishment, these nine things are to be developed.
This is what the Blessed One said. Elated, those bhikkhus delighted in the Blessed One's statement.¹
