[30] "Bhikkhus, this night, when the night was far advanced, a certain deity (devatā) of surpassing beauty, illuminating the entire Jetavana, approached me; having approached and paid homage to me, she stood to one side. Standing to one side, bhikkhus, that deity said this to me: 'Venerable sir, these seven dhammas lead to a bhikkhu's non-decline. What seven? Reverence for the Teacher, reverence for the Dhamma, reverence for the Saṅgha, reverence for the training (sikkhā), reverence for concentration (samādhi), reverence for moral shame (hiri), and reverence for moral dread (ottappa). These seven dhammas, venerable sir, lead to a bhikkhu's non-decline.' This is what that deity said, bhikkhus. Having said this, she paid homage to me, circumambulated me with her right side toward me, and vanished right there.
Revering the Teacher, revering the Dhamma,
with keen reverence for the Saṅgha,
revering concentration, ardent,
with keen reverence for the training,
endowed with moral shame and moral dread,
deferential and respectful —
such a one is incapable of decline
and is indeed in the presence of Nibbāna."
