[31] "Bhikkhus, this night a certain deity … said this to me: 'Venerable sir, these seven qualities (dhammā) lead to a bhikkhu's non-decline. What seven? Reverence for the Teacher (satthugāravatā), reverence for the Dhamma (dhammagāravatā), reverence for the Saṅgha (saṅghagāravatā), reverence for the training (sikkhāgāravatā), reverence for concentration (samādhi) (samādhigāravatā), amenability to correction (sovacassatā), and good friendship (kalyāṇamittatā). These seven qualities, venerable sir, lead to a bhikkhu's non-decline.' This is what that deity said, bhikkhus. Having said this, she paid homage to me, circumambulated me with her right side toward me, and vanished right there.
Revering the Teacher, revering the Dhamma,
with keen reverence for the Saṅgha,
revering concentration, ardent,
with keen reverence for the training,
having good friends, easy to admonish,
deferential and respectful —
such a one is incapable of decline
and is in the very presence of Nibbāna.
