[75] Bhikkhus, possessing seven qualities a bhikkhu is an upholder of the Discipline (vinayadhara). What seven? He knows what is an offense (āpatti); he knows what is not an offense; he knows a light offense; he knows a grave offense; he recollects his manifold past abodes, that is, one birth, two births … thus, with their aspects and particulars, he recollects his manifold past abodes; with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human … he understands beings as they fare on in accordance with their kamma; with the destruction of the taints (āsava), he realizes for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon them, he dwells therein. Bhikkhus, possessing these seven qualities a bhikkhu is an upholder of the Discipline.
