[83] Bhikkhus, one is an ascetic (samaṇa) because of having calmed (samitattā) seven things; one is a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) because of having banished (bāhitattā) them; one is a sottika because of having removed the threads (nissuttattā); one is a bathed one (nahātaka) because of having washed them away (nahātattā); one is a knowledge-master (vedagū) because of having known (viditattā) them; one is an arahant (arahā) because of being far removed (ārakattā) from them. From which seven? Personality view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) is far removed; doubt (vicikicchā) is far removed; adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa) is far removed; lust (rāga) is far removed; hatred (dosa) is far removed; delusion (moha) is far removed; conceit (māna) is far removed. Bhikkhus, one is an arahant because of being far removed from these seven things.
