[85] Bhikkhus, these seven persons are worthy of gifts (āhuneyya), worthy of hospitality (pāhuneyya), worthy of offerings (dakkhiṇeyya), worthy of reverential salutation (añjalikaraṇīya), an incomparable field of merit for the world. Which seven?
Here, bhikkhus, a certain person dwells contemplating impermanence in the eye (cakkhu), percipient of impermanence, experiencing impermanence — constantly, continuously, without interruption — resolving upon it with the mind, fathoming it with wisdom (paññā). With the destruction of the taints (āsava), he realizes for himself with superknowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and having entered upon it, dwells therein. This, bhikkhus, is the first person who is worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of reverential salutation, an incomparable field of merit for the world.
Again, furthermore, bhikkhus, here a certain person dwells contemplating impermanence in the eye, percipient of impermanence, experiencing impermanence — constantly, continuously, without interruption — resolving upon it with the mind, fathoming it with wisdom. For him the exhaustion of the taints and the exhaustion of life occur neither before nor after one another. This, bhikkhus, is the second person who is worthy of gifts … an incomparable field of merit for the world.
Again, furthermore, bhikkhus, here a certain person dwells contemplating impermanence in the eye, percipient of impermanence, experiencing impermanence — constantly, continuously, without interruption — resolving upon it with the mind, fathoming it with wisdom. With the utter destruction of the five lower fetters (orambhāgiyāni saṃyojanāni), he becomes one who attains final Nibbāna in the interval (antarāparinibbāyī) … one who attains final Nibbāna upon landing (upahaccaparinibbāyī) … one who attains final Nibbāna without exertion (asaṅkhāraparinibbāyī) … one who attains final Nibbāna with exertion (sasaṅkhāraparinibbāyī) … one bound upstream, going to the Akaniṭṭha realm (uddhaṃsoto akaniṭṭhagāmī). This, bhikkhus, is the seventh person who is worthy of gifts … an incomparable field of merit for the world.
These, bhikkhus, are the seven persons who are worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of reverential salutation, an incomparable field of merit for the world.
