[13] Bhikkhus, there are these ten fetters (saṃyojana). What ten? The five lower fetters (orambhāgiya-saṃyojana) and the five higher fetters (uddhambhāgiya-saṃyojana). What are the five lower fetters? Personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi), doubt (vicikicchā), adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa), sensual desire (kāmacchanda), and ill will (byāpāda). These are the five lower fetters. What are the five higher fetters? Greed for fine-material existence (rūparāga), greed for immaterial existence (arūparāga), conceit (māna), restlessness (uddhacca), and ignorance (avijjā). These are the five higher fetters. These, bhikkhus, are the ten fetters.
