[160] Bhikkhus, non-dhamma (adhamma) should be known, and harm (anattha); dhamma should be known, and benefit (attha). Having known non-dhamma and harm, and having known dhamma and benefit, one should practice in accordance with dhamma and in accordance with benefit.
And what, bhikkhus, is non-dhamma and harm? The destruction of life (pāṇātipāta), taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, frivolous talk, covetousness, ill will, wrong view — this, bhikkhus, is called non-dhamma and harm.
And what, bhikkhus, is dhamma and benefit? Abstention (veramaṇī) from the destruction of life, abstention from taking what is not given, abstention from sexual misconduct, abstention from false speech, abstention from divisive speech, abstention from harsh speech, abstention from frivolous talk, non-covetousness, non-ill will, right view — this, bhikkhus, is called dhamma and benefit.
"Bhikkhus, non-dhamma should be known, and harm; dhamma should be known, and benefit. Having known non-dhamma and harm, and having known dhamma and benefit, one should practice in accordance with dhamma and in accordance with benefit" — thus, what was said was said in reference to this.
