[163] Bhikkhus, I declare that the destruction of life (pāṇātipāta), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that taking what is not given (adinnādāna), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that misconduct in sensual pleasures (kāmesu micchācāra), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that false speech (musāvāda), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that malicious speech (pisuṇā vācā), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that harsh speech (pharusā vācā), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that frivolous talk (samphappalāpa), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that covetousness (abhijjhā), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that ill will (byāpāda), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion. Bhikkhus, I declare that wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi), too, is of three kinds: caused by greed, caused by hatred, and caused by delusion.
Thus indeed, bhikkhus, greed is an origin of the sources of kamma; hatred is an origin of the sources of kamma; delusion is an origin of the sources of kamma. With the destruction of greed comes the destruction of the source of kamma; with the destruction of hatred comes the destruction of the source of kamma; with the destruction of delusion comes the destruction of the source of kamma.
