[164] Bhikkhus, this Dhamma provides a means of bypassing (parikkamana); this Dhamma is not without a means of bypassing. And how, bhikkhus, does this Dhamma provide a means of bypassing, and is not without a means of bypassing? For one who destroys life, bhikkhus, abstention (veramaṇī) from the destruction of life is the means of bypassing. For one who takes what is not given, bhikkhus, abstention from taking what is not given is the means of bypassing. For one who engages in sexual misconduct, bhikkhus, abstention from sexual misconduct is the means of bypassing. For one who speaks falsely, bhikkhus, abstention from false speech is the means of bypassing. For one who speaks maliciously, bhikkhus, abstention from malicious speech is the means of bypassing. For one who speaks harshly, bhikkhus, abstention from harsh speech is the means of bypassing. For one who indulges in frivolous talk, bhikkhus, abstention from frivolous talk is the means of bypassing. For one given to covetousness, bhikkhus, non-covetousness is the means of bypassing. For one with ill will, bhikkhus, non-ill will is the means of bypassing. For one of wrong view, bhikkhus, right view is the means of bypassing. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, there is a means of bypassing. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that this Dhamma provides a means of bypassing; this Dhamma is not without a means of bypassing.
