[35] "'Schism in the Saṅgha (saṅghabheda), schism in the Saṅgha,' it is said, Bhante. In what way, Bhante, is the Saṅgha divided?"
"Here, Upāli, bhikkhus explain what is not Dhamma as 'Dhamma'; they explain what is Dhamma as 'not Dhamma'; they explain what is not Vinaya (discipline) as 'Vinaya'; they explain what is Vinaya as 'not Vinaya'; they explain what was not spoken and not uttered by the Tathāgata as 'spoken and uttered by the Tathāgata'; they explain what was spoken and uttered by the Tathāgata as 'not spoken and not uttered by the Tathāgata'; they explain what was not practised by the Tathāgata as 'practised by the Tathāgata'; they explain what was practised by the Tathāgata as 'not practised by the Tathāgata'; they explain what was not prescribed by the Tathāgata as 'prescribed by the Tathāgata'; they explain what was prescribed by the Tathāgata as 'not prescribed by the Tathāgata.' On these ten grounds they withdraw and draw apart; they perform legal acts (kamma) separately and recite the Pātimokkha separately. To this extent, Upāli, the Saṅgha is divided."
