[34] "Venerable sir, possessed of how many qualities should a bhikkhu give dependence (nissaya)? … should a bhikkhu have a novice (sāmaṇera) attend upon him?"
"Upāli, it is a bhikkhu possessed of ten qualities who may have a novice attend upon him. Which ten? Here, Upāli, a bhikkhu is virtuous … he trains, having undertaken them, in the training rules; he is learned … well penetrated by view; moreover, the Pātimokkha has been well transmitted to him in detail, well analyzed, well mastered in recitation, well determined, rule by rule and letter by letter; he is able to nurse one who is sick or to have him nursed; he is able to allay discontent or to have it allayed; he is able to dispel arisen remorse in accordance with the Dhamma; he is able to detach one from an arisen wrong view in accordance with the Dhamma; he is able to encourage the undertaking of the higher virtue (adhisīla); he is able to encourage the undertaking of the higher mind (adhicitta); he is able to encourage the undertaking of the higher wisdom (adhipaññā). It is a bhikkhu possessed of these ten qualities, Upāli, who may have a novice attend upon him."
