[48] Bhikkhus, these ten dhammas should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth (pabbajita). What ten? "I have come to a state without caste-distinction (vevaṇṇiya)" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "My livelihood is bound up with others" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "A different deportment is to be practised by me" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "Does my own self not reproach me concerning virtue (sīla)?" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "Do wise companions in the holy life, having investigated, not reproach me concerning virtue?" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "There will be alteration and separation from all who are dear and pleasing to me" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "I am the owner of my kamma, heir of my kamma, born of my kamma, related to my kamma, with kamma as my refuge; whatever kamma I shall do, good or evil, of that I shall be the heir" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "In what manner do the nights and days pass for me?" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "Do I delight in an empty dwelling?" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. "Has any superhuman state (uttarimanussadhamma), any distinction in knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision worthy of the noble ones, been attained by me, so that in my final days, when questioned by companions in the holy life, I shall not be dismayed?" — this should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth. These, bhikkhus, are the ten dhammas that should be frequently reflected upon by one gone forth.
