[87] There the Blessed One, with reference to the bhikkhu Kāḷaka, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus!" "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:
"Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is a creator of disciplinary issues (adhikaraṇa) and does not speak in praise of the settlement of disciplinary issues. Insofar as a bhikkhu is a creator of disciplinary issues and does not speak in praise of the settlement of disciplinary issues, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not desirous of the training (sikkhā) and does not speak in praise of undertaking the training. Insofar as a bhikkhu is not desirous of the training and does not speak in praise of undertaking the training, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is of evil desires (pāpiccha) and does not speak in praise of the removal of desires. Insofar as a bhikkhu is of evil desires and does not speak in praise of the removal of desires, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is prone to anger and does not speak in praise of the removal of anger. Insofar as a bhikkhu is prone to anger and does not speak in praise of the removal of anger, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is a denigrator (makkhī) and does not speak in praise of the removal of denigration. Insofar as a bhikkhu is a denigrator and does not speak in praise of the removal of denigration, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is crafty (saṭha) and does not speak in praise of the removal of craftiness (sāṭheyya). Insofar as a bhikkhu is crafty and does not speak in praise of the removal of craftiness, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is deceitful (māyāvī) and does not speak in praise of the removal of deceit. Insofar as a bhikkhu is deceitful and does not speak in praise of the removal of deceit, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not one who by nature attends carefully to the teachings (dhamma) and does not speak in praise of careful examination of the teachings. Insofar as a bhikkhu is not one who by nature attends carefully to the teachings and does not speak in praise of careful examination of the teachings, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not given to seclusion (paṭisallāna) and does not speak in praise of seclusion. Insofar as a bhikkhu is not given to seclusion and does not speak in praise of seclusion, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not hospitable toward his companions in the holy life (sabrahmacārī) and does not speak in praise of hospitality (paṭisanthāra). Insofar as a bhikkhu is not hospitable toward his companions in the holy life and does not speak in praise of hospitality, this quality too does not conduce to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, or to unity.
"Bhikkhus, even though such a bhikkhu might conceive the wish, 'Oh, that my companions in the holy life would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!' — still his companions in the holy life do not honor, respect, esteem, or venerate him. Why is that? Because, bhikkhus, his wise companions in the holy life see those evil, unwholesome qualities of his still unabandoned. Suppose, bhikkhus, a foolish horse might conceive the wish, 'Oh, that people would place me in the position of a thoroughbred, feed me a thoroughbred's food, and give me a thoroughbred's grooming!' — still people do not place it in the position of a thoroughbred, feed it a thoroughbred's food, or give it a thoroughbred's grooming. Why is that? Because, bhikkhus, wise people see its craftiness, fraudulence, crookedness, and deviousness still unabandoned. In the same way, bhikkhus, even though such a bhikkhu might conceive the wish, 'Oh, that my companions in the holy life would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!' — still his companions in the holy life do not honor, respect, esteem, or venerate him. Why is that? Because, bhikkhus, his wise companions in the holy life see those evil, unwholesome qualities of his still unabandoned.
"But here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not a creator of disciplinary issues and speaks in praise of the settlement of disciplinary issues. Insofar as a bhikkhu is not a creator of disciplinary issues and speaks in praise of the settlement of disciplinary issues, this quality too conduces to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, and to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is desirous of the training and speaks in praise of undertaking the training. Insofar as a bhikkhu is desirous of the training and speaks in praise of undertaking the training, this quality too conduces to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, and to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is of few desires and speaks in praise of the removal of desires. Insofar as a bhikkhu is of few desires and speaks in praise of the removal of desires, this quality too … conduces to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is free from anger and speaks in praise of the removal of anger. Insofar as a bhikkhu is free from anger and speaks in praise of the removal of anger, this quality too … conduces to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not a denigrator and speaks in praise of the removal of denigration. Insofar as a bhikkhu is not a denigrator and speaks in praise of the removal of denigration, this quality too … conduces to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not crafty and speaks in praise of the removal of craftiness. Insofar as a bhikkhu is not crafty and speaks in praise of the removal of craftiness, this quality too … conduces to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not deceitful and speaks in praise of the removal of deceit. Insofar as a bhikkhu is not deceitful and speaks in praise of the removal of deceit, this quality too … conduces to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is one who by nature attends carefully to the teachings and speaks in praise of careful examination of the teachings. Insofar as a bhikkhu is one who by nature attends carefully to the teachings and speaks in praise of careful examination of the teachings, this quality too … conduces to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is given to seclusion and speaks in praise of seclusion. Insofar as a bhikkhu is given to seclusion and speaks in praise of seclusion, this quality too … conduces to unity.
"Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is hospitable toward his companions in the holy life and speaks in praise of hospitality. Insofar as a bhikkhu is hospitable toward his companions in the holy life and speaks in praise of hospitality, this quality too conduces to affection, to respect, to esteem, to concord, and to unity.
"Bhikkhus, even though such a bhikkhu might not conceive the wish, 'Oh, that my companions in the holy life would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!' — still his companions in the holy life honor, respect, esteem, and venerate him. Why is that? Because, bhikkhus, his wise companions in the holy life see those evil, unwholesome qualities of his abandoned. Suppose, bhikkhus, a fine thoroughbred horse might not conceive the wish, 'Oh, that people would place me in the position of a thoroughbred, feed me a thoroughbred's food, and give me a thoroughbred's grooming!' — still people place it in the position of a thoroughbred, feed it a thoroughbred's food, and give it a thoroughbred's grooming. Why is that? Because, bhikkhus, wise people see its craftiness, fraudulence, crookedness, and deviousness abandoned. In the same way, bhikkhus, even though such a bhikkhu might not conceive the wish, 'Oh, that my companions in the holy life would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!' — still his companions in the holy life honor, respect, esteem, and venerate him. Why is that? Because, bhikkhus, his wise companions in the holy life see those evil, unwholesome qualities of his abandoned."
