[88] Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu is one who abuses and reviles his fellow practitioners of the holy life, a reviler of the noble ones (ariyupavādī), it is impossible, there is no chance, that he would not incur one or another of ten disasters (byasana). Which ten? He does not attain what he has not yet attained; he falls away from what he has attained; the true Dhamma (saddhamma) is not clarified for him; or he becomes conceited with overestimation regarding the true Dhamma; or he lives the holy life dissatisfied; or he commits a certain defiled offense (āpatti); or he is stricken by a grave illness; or he goes mad, his mind (citta) becoming deranged; he dies confused; and with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, the lower world, hell. Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu is one who abuses and reviles his fellow practitioners of the holy life, a reviler of the noble ones, it is impossible, there is no chance, that he would not incur one or another of these ten disasters.
