[104] Now at that time, the people in Sāvatthī, on seeing bhikkhus, abused, reviled, vexed, and harassed them with uncivil and harsh words: "These ascetics (samaṇā), followers of the Sakyan son (sakyaputtiyā), are shameless, immoral, of evil character, speakers of falsehood, and do not live the holy life (abrahmacārino). And yet these will claim to be walkers in the Dhamma, walkers in harmony, livers of the holy life, speakers of truth, virtuous, and of good character! There is no asceticism (sāmañña) in these; there is no brahminhood (brahmañña) in these. Perished is the asceticism of these; perished is the brahminhood of these. Whence the asceticism of these? Whence the brahminhood of these? These have fallen away from asceticism; these have fallen away from brahminhood. For how indeed could a man, having done a man's deed, deprive a woman of life?"
