[103] Then the wanderers of other sects (aññatitthiyā paribbājakā), unable to endure the honor shown to the Blessed One and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, approached the female wanderer (paribbājikā) Sundarī; and having approached, they said this to the female wanderer Sundarī: "Sister, are you able to do good for your relatives?"
"What am I to do, masters? What is it that I can do? Even my life has been relinquished for the good of my relatives."
"Then, sister, go frequently to Jetavana."
"Yes, masters," the female wanderer Sundarī replied to those wanderers of other sects, and she went frequently to Jetavana.
When those wanderers of other sects learned, "The female wanderer Sundarī has indeed been seen by many people going frequently to Jetavana," then, having deprived her of life and buried her right there in a pit of the moat around Jetavana, they approached King Pasenadi of Kosala; and having approached, they said this to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "Great king, the female wanderer Sundarī — she is nowhere to be seen by us."
"But where do you suspect she is?"
"In Jetavana, great king."
"Then search Jetavana."
Then those wanderers of other sects, having searched Jetavana, drew the body up out of the moat-pit just as it had been laid there, placed it on a bier, and brought it into Sāvatthī; and going from street to street, from crossroads to crossroads, they stirred the people to indignation: "See, sirs, the deed of the ascetics (samaṇā), sons of the Sakyan! Shameless are these ascetics, sons of the Sakyan — immoral, of evil character, speakers of falsehood, not living the holy life. Yet these very ones will claim that they live by the Dhamma, live evenly, live the holy life, speak truth, are virtuous, of good character! These have no asceticism (sāmañña); these have no brahminhood (brahmañña). Perished is their asceticism; perished is their brahminhood. Whence asceticism for these? Whence brahminhood for these? These are bereft of asceticism; these are bereft of brahminhood. For how can a man, having done a man's deed, deprive a woman of life?"
