[122] Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, prepare a lodging (senāsana) for this visiting bhikkhu."
Then it occurred to the Venerable Ānanda: "For whatever bhikkhu the Blessed One commands me, saying: 'Ānanda, prepare a lodging for this visiting bhikkhu,' the Blessed One wishes to dwell in one dwelling together with that bhikkhu: the Blessed One wishes to dwell in one dwelling together with the Venerable Soṇa." And in the dwelling in which the Blessed One was staying, the Venerable Ānanda prepared a lodging for the Venerable Soṇa.
Then the Blessed One, having passed much of the night lying down in the open air, washed his feet and entered the dwelling. The Venerable Soṇa too, having passed much of the night lying down in the open air, washed his feet and entered the dwelling.
Then the Blessed One, rising at the dawn hour of the night, invited the Venerable Mahāsoṇa: "Bhikkhu, may it occur to you to speak the Dhamma."
"Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Soṇa replied to the Blessed One, and he recited with intonation all sixteen [suttas] of the Aṭṭhakavagga.
Then, at the conclusion of the Venerable Soṇa's intoned recitation (sarabhañña), the Blessed One expressed his great approval: "Good, good, bhikkhu! Well learned by you, bhikkhu, are the [suttas] of the Aṭṭhakavagga, well attended to, well borne in mind. You are endowed with lovely speech — distinct, faultless, making the meaning intelligible. Of how many rains (vassa) are you, bhikkhu?"
"I am of one rains, Blessed One."
"But why, bhikkhu, did you take so long?"
"Venerable sir, long have I seen the danger (ādīnava) in sensual pleasures; moreover, the household life is confining, with many duties, many things to be done."
Then the Blessed One, having understood the meaning of this, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
Having seen the danger in the world,
having known the Dhamma free of acquisitions (nirūpadhi),
the noble one does not delight in evil;
in evil the pure one does not delight.
