[132] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Pubbārāma, the mansion of Migāra's mother. Now on that occasion the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion (paṭisallāna) in the evening, was sitting outside the gateway. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Now on that occasion seven matted-hair ascetics (jaṭila), seven nigaṇṭhas, seven naked ascetics (acela), seven one-robed ascetics (ekasāṭa), and seven wanderers (paribbājaka), their armpit-hair, nails, and body-hair grown long, carrying their various requisites on carrying-poles, were walking along not far from the Blessed One. King Pasenadi of Kosala saw those seven matted-hair ascetics, seven nigaṇṭhas, seven naked ascetics, seven one-robed ascetics, and seven wanderers, their armpit-hair, nails, and body-hair grown long, carrying their various requisites on carrying-poles, walking along not far from the Blessed One; and having seen them, he rose from his seat, arranged his upper garment over one shoulder, set his right knee upon the ground, raised his joined palms in reverential salutation toward those seven matted-hair ascetics, seven nigaṇṭhas, seven naked ascetics, seven one-robed ascetics, and seven wanderers, and announced his name three times: "Venerable sirs, I am King Pasenadi of Kosala; venerable sirs, I am King Pasenadi of Kosala." Then, not long after those seven matted-hair ascetics, seven nigaṇṭhas, seven naked ascetics, seven one-robed ascetics, and seven wanderers had departed, King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, King Pasenadi of Kosala said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, are these among those in the world who are arahants, or who have entered upon the path of arahantship?"
