[143] 7. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Subhūti was seated not far from the Blessed One, having folded his legs crosswise and set his body erect, having entered a concentration (samādhi) without thought (vitakka). The Blessed One saw the Venerable Subhūti seated not far away, having folded his legs crosswise and set his body erect, having entered the concentration without thought.
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"He in whom thoughts have been dispelled,
well cut off within, without remainder —
transcending that tie (saṅga), percipient of the formless,
gone beyond the four bonds (yoga), he does not come to birth."
