[154] 8. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Mahākaccāna was sitting not far from the Blessed One, having folded his legs crosswise, having set his body erect, with mindfulness directed to the body (kāyagatā sati) well established internally, to the fore. The Blessed One saw the Venerable Mahākaccāna sitting not far away, having folded his legs crosswise, having set his body erect, with mindfulness directed to the body well established internally, to the fore.
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, at that time uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"For whom mindfulness directed to the body
is at all times constantly established:
'It might not be, and it might not be for me;
it will not be, and it will not be for me' —
dwelling therein in the successive stages (anupubbavihārī),
he in due time would cross over attachment (visattikā)."
