[146] 10. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, so long as Tathāgatas, Arahants, Fully Self-Enlightened Ones (tathāgatā arahanto sammāsambuddhā) do not arise in the world, for just so long the wanderers of other sects (aññatitthiyā paribbājakā) are honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, and are gainers of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. But, venerable sir, when Tathāgatas, Arahants, Fully Self-Enlightened Ones arise in the world, then the wanderers of other sects are not honored, not respected, not esteemed, not venerated, and not revered, and are not gainers of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. And now, venerable sir, the Blessed One is honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, a gainer of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick — and so too is the Saṅgha of bhikkhus."
"So it is, Ānanda! So it is, Ānanda! So long, Ānanda, as Tathāgatas, Arahants, Fully Self-Enlightened Ones do not arise in the world, for just so long the wanderers of other sects are honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, and are gainers of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. But, Ānanda, when Tathāgatas, Arahants, Fully Self-Enlightened Ones arise in the world, then the wanderers of other sects are not honored, not respected, not esteemed, not venerated, and not revered, and are not gainers of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. And now the Tathāgata is honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, a gainer of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick — and so too is the Saṅgha of bhikkhus."
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
The glow-worm shines only so long as the light-maker has not risen;
but when the radiant one has arisen, its radiance is destroyed and it shines no more.
Even so, the shining of the sectarians (titthiyā) lasts only so long
as Fully Self-Enlightened Ones do not arise in the world;
the reasoners (takkikā) are not purified, nor yet their disciples;
those of evil views are not released from suffering (dukkha).
The tenth.
