[147] 1. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Sāriputta was instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the Venerable Lakuṇṭhakabhaddiya in many ways with a talk on the Dhamma. Then, as the Venerable Lakuṇṭhakabhaddiya was being instructed, exhorted, inspired, and gladdened by the Venerable Sāriputta in many ways with a talk on the Dhamma, his mind (citta) was liberated from the taints (āsava) through not clinging. And the Blessed One saw the Venerable Lakuṇṭhakabhaddiya — as he was being instructed, exhorted, inspired, and gladdened by the Venerable Sāriputta in many ways with a talk on the Dhamma — with his mind liberated from the taints through not clinging.
Then the Blessed One, having understood the meaning of this, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
Fully released above, below, everywhere,
not contemplating: "This am I" —
one thus liberated has crossed over the flood
never crossed before, for no renewed existence.
