[148] 2. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Sāriputta, supposing the Venerable Lakuṇṭhakabhaddiya to be a learner (sekha), was instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening him all the more with talk on the Dhamma in many ways. The Blessed One saw the Venerable Sāriputta—supposing the Venerable Lakuṇṭhakabhaddiya to be a learner—instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening him all the more with talk on the Dhamma in many ways.
Then the Blessed One, having understood this meaning, at that time uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"He has cut the round (vaṭṭa), reached the desireless;
the stream, dried up, flows no more;
the round, cut off, turns no more—
just this is the end of suffering (dukkha)."
