[151] 5. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Lakuṇṭhakabhaddiya, following along right behind many bhikkhus, approached the Blessed One. The Blessed One saw the Venerable Lakuṇṭhakabhaddiya even from afar, coming along right behind many bhikkhus — ugly, unsightly, dwarfish, for the most part held in contempt by the bhikkhus. Having seen him, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, do you see that bhikkhu coming from afar, following right behind many bhikkhus — ugly, unsightly, dwarfish, for the most part held in contempt by the bhikkhus?"
"Yes, venerable sir."
"Bhikkhus, that bhikkhu is of great spiritual power, of great might; and it is not easy to find an attainment (samāpatti) that has not already been attained by that bhikkhu. And as for that unsurpassed consummation of the holy life (brahmacariya) for the sake of which clansmen rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness — having realized it for himself through superknowledge (abhiññā) in this very life, he has entered upon it and dwells in it."
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"Faultless in its parts, with a white canopy,
the one-spoked chariot rolls on.
Behold him coming, untroubled —
his stream cut, without bonds."
