[161] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was instructing, urging, rousing, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk connected with Nibbāna; and those bhikkhus, treating it as of vital importance, attending to it, concentrating upon it with their whole mind, listened to the Dhamma with ears intent. Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, at that time uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"For one who is dependent there is wavering; for one who is not dependent there is no wavering.
When there is no wavering, there is tranquility (passaddhi);
when there is tranquility, there is no delight;
when there is no delight, there is no coming and going;
when there is no coming and going, there is no passing away and reappearing;
when there is no passing away and reappearing, there is neither here nor beyond nor in between the two.
Just this is the end of suffering (dukkha)."
