[160] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was instructing, exhorting, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a talk on the Dhamma connected with Nibbāna; and those bhikkhus—treating it as a matter of vital concern, attending to it, focusing on it with their whole mind—listened to the Dhamma with ears intent.
Then the Blessed One, having understood the significance of this, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"There is, bhikkhus, an unborn (ajāta), an unbecome (abhūta), an unmade (akata), an unconditioned (asaṅkhata). If, bhikkhus, there were not that unborn, unbecome, unmade, unconditioned, no escape (nissaraṇa) would be discerned here from the born, the become, the made, the conditioned. But since, bhikkhus, there is an unborn, an unbecome, an unmade, an unconditioned, therefore an escape from the born, the become, the made, the conditioned is discerned."
