[164] Then the Blessed One, turning aside from the road, approached the foot of a certain tree. Having approached, he addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Come now, Ānanda, lay out my outer robe (saṅghāṭi) folded in four; I am tired and will sit down."
"Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One, and he laid out the outer robe folded in four.¹ The Blessed One sat down on the seat prepared. Having sat down, the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Come now, Ānanda, bring me some drinking water; I am thirsty, Ānanda, and I will drink."
When this was said, the Venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: "Just now, venerable sir, some five hundred carts have passed across; that water, churned up by the wheels, flows scanty, stirred up, and turbid. But this river Kukuṭā is not far off, its water clear, its water agreeable, its water cool, its water limpid, with lovely fords, delightful. There the Blessed One will both drink the drinking water and cool his limbs."
A second time the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Come now, Ānanda, bring me some drinking water; I am thirsty, Ānanda, and I will drink."
