[165] Then that river — cut up by wheels, shallow, flowing stirred up and turbid — flowed clear, limpid, and unturbid as the Venerable Ānanda approached. Then it occurred to the Venerable Ānanda: "It is wonderful indeed, sir! It is marvellous indeed, sir — the great psychic power (mahiddhikatā) and great majesty (mahānubhāvakatā) of the Tathāgata! For this river — cut up by wheels, shallow, flowing stirred up and turbid — flows clear, limpid, and unturbid as I approach." Taking drinking water in his bowl, he approached the Blessed One; and having approached, he said this to the Blessed One: "It is wonderful, venerable sir! It is marvellous, venerable sir — the great psychic power and great majesty of the Tathāgata! For this river, venerable sir — cut up by wheels, shallow, flowing stirred up and turbid — flowed clear, limpid, and unturbid as I approached. Let the Blessed One drink the water! Let the Sublime One (Sugata) drink the water!" Then the Blessed One drank the water.
