[170] Then the Blessed One addressed the lay followers (upāsakā) of Pāṭaligāma:
"Householders (gahapatayo), there are these five dangers (ādīnava) for an immoral person (dussīla) through failure in virtue (sīlavipatti). What five?
(1) Here, householders, an immoral person, one who has failed in virtue, by reason of heedlessness (pamāda) incurs great loss of wealth. This is the first danger for an immoral person through failure in virtue.
(2) Furthermore, householders, an evil report has spread abroad concerning an immoral person, one who has failed in virtue. This is the second danger for an immoral person through failure in virtue.
(3) Furthermore, householders, whatever assembly (parisā) an immoral person, one who has failed in virtue, approaches — whether an assembly of noblemen (khattiya), an assembly of brahmins (brāhmaṇa), an assembly of householders, or an assembly of recluses (samaṇa) — he approaches it without confidence, abashed. This is the third danger for an immoral person through failure in virtue.
(4) Furthermore, householders, an immoral person, one who has failed in virtue, dies confused. This is the fourth danger for an immoral person through failure in virtue.
(5) Furthermore, householders, an immoral person, one who has failed in virtue, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in a state of loss (apāya), a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell (niraya). This is the fifth danger for an immoral person through failure in virtue.
These, householders, are the five dangers for an immoral person through failure in virtue.
"Householders, there are these five benefits (ānisaṃsa) for a virtuous person (sīlavā) through accomplishment in virtue (sīlasampadā). What five?
(1) Here, householders, a virtuous person, one accomplished in virtue, by reason of heedfulness (appamāda) obtains a great mass of wealth. This is the first benefit for a virtuous person through accomplishment in virtue.
(2) Furthermore, householders, a good report spreads abroad concerning a virtuous person, one accomplished in virtue. This is the second benefit for a virtuous person through accomplishment in virtue.
(3) Furthermore, householders, whatever assembly one accomplished in virtue approaches — whether an assembly of noblemen, an assembly of brahmins, an assembly of householders, or an assembly of recluses — he approaches it with confidence, unabashed. This is the third benefit for a virtuous person through accomplishment in virtue.
(4) Furthermore, householders, a virtuous person, one accomplished in virtue, dies unconfused. This is the fourth benefit for a virtuous person through accomplishment in virtue.
(5) Furthermore, householders, a virtuous person, one accomplished in virtue, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in a good destination (sugati), in a heavenly world (sagga loka). This is the fifth benefit for a virtuous person through accomplishment in virtue.
These, householders, are the five benefits for a virtuous person through accomplishment in virtue."
