[179] 1. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, abandon one thing (dhamma); I am your guarantor (pāṭibhoga) for non-returning (anāgāmitā). What one thing? Bhikkhus, abandon the one thing that is greed (lobha); I am your guarantor for non-returning."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning (attha). In this connection it is said:
"The greed by which greedy beings go to a bad destination (duggati) —
having rightly understood that greed, those with insight abandon it;
having abandoned it, they never come again to this world."
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, so I have heard.
The First.
