[199] 1. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, here, having encompassed with my own mind the mind (citta) of a certain person whose mind is clear and confident (pasannacitta), I understand thus: 'If this person were to die at this time, he would be placed in heaven as though carried and put there.' For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, his mind is clear and confident. Indeed, bhikkhus, it is because of clarity and confidence of mind (cetopasāda) that some beings here, on the breakup of the body, after death, are thus reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In that connection, this is said:
Knowing a certain person here whose mind is clear and confident,
the Buddha declared this matter in the presence of the bhikkhus:
"If at this time this person should die,
he would be reborn in a good destination, for his mind has been made clear and confident.
Just as one might carry something and set it down, even so is such a one placed;
for it is because of clarity and confidence of mind that beings go to a good destination."
This matter, too, was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard. The first.
