[198] 10. This indeed was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant — so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, here, having encompassed his mind with my own mind, I understand a certain person whose mind (citta) is corrupted thus: 'If this person were to die at this very time, he would be deposited in hell (niraya) as if he were carried off and put there.' For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, his mind is corrupted. Indeed, bhikkhus, it is by reason of corruption of mind (cetopadosa) that some beings here, with the breakup of the body, after death, are reborn thus in a state of loss and woe (apāya), a bad destination (duggati), a place of ruin (vinipāta), hell."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In that connection this is said:
"Having known a certain person here whose mind was corrupted,
the Buddha declared this matter in the presence of the bhikkhus:
'Were this person to die at this very time,
he would be reborn in hell, for his mind is corrupted.'
Just as one might carry something off and set it down, even so is such a one;
for it is by reason of corruption of mind that beings go to a bad destination."
This matter too was spoken by the Blessed One — so I have heard.
The Tenth.
The Second Chapter, the second.
The summary (uddāna) thereof:
"Delusion (moha) and anger (kodha),¹ then detraction (makkha); delusion and sensual pleasure (kāma); the two on the trainee (sekha);
schism (bheda) and gladness (moda); and the person (puggala) — [these], they say, [make up] the chapter: it is called the second."
