[213] This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, this holy life (brahmacariya) is not lived for the purpose of deceiving people (kuhanā), nor for the purpose of cajoling people (lapanā), nor for the sake of the benefits of gain, honor, and fame, nor with the thought, 'Let people know me thus.' Rather, bhikkhus, this holy life is lived for the purpose of restraint (saṃvara) and for the purpose of abandonment (pahāna)."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. Concerning this, it is said:
For the purpose of restraint, for the purpose of abandonment,
the Blessed One taught the holy life,
not based on hearsay (anītiha),
culminating in Nibbāna.
This is the path followed
by those of great purpose, by the great seers;
and whoever practice it
as taught by the Buddha,
carrying out the Teacher's teaching,
will make an end of suffering (dukkha).
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
