[250] 3. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant — so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, there are these three elements (dhātu) of escape (nissaraṇiyā dhātuyo). What three? This is the escape (nissaraṇa) from sensual pleasures, namely, renunciation (nekkhamma); this is the escape from forms, namely, the formless (āruppa); and whatever has come to be, is conditioned (saṅkhata), and has dependently arisen (paṭiccasamuppanna) — cessation (nirodha) is the escape from it. These, bhikkhus, are the three elements of escape."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In that connection, this is said:
Having known the escape from sensual pleasures, and having passed beyond forms,
touching the stilling of all formations (sabbasaṅkhārasamatha), ardent (ātāpī) at all times —
that bhikkhu indeed is one who sees rightly; since he is liberated therein,
consummate in direct knowledge (abhiññā), at peace, that sage (muni) indeed has gone beyond the bonds (yoga).
This matter, too, was spoken by the Blessed One — so I have heard.
