[298] "You claim to be a ploughman (kassaka),
yet we do not see your ploughing.
Asked about your ploughing, tell us,
that we may know your ploughing."
"Faith (saddhā) is the seed, austerity (tapo) the rain;
wisdom (paññā) is my yoke and plough;
moral shame (hirī) is the pole, mind (mano) the strap;
mindfulness (sati) is my ploughshare and goad.
"Guarded in body, guarded in speech,
restrained in food for the belly,
I make truth (sacca) my weeding;
meekness (soracca) is my unyoking.
"Energy (viriya) is my burden-bearing ox,
carrying me on to security from bondage (yogakkhema);
it goes on without turning back
to where, having gone, one does not sorrow.
"Thus has this ploughing of mine been ploughed:
it has the Deathless (amata) as its fruit.
Having ploughed this ploughing,
one is released from all suffering (dukkha)."
