[324] When this was said, those affluent brahmins (brāhmaṇamahāsālā) said to the Blessed One: "Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! Just as, Master Gotama, one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the path (magga) to one who has gone astray, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes may see forms — in the same way the Dhamma has been made clear in many ways by Master Gotama. We here go for refuge (saraṇa) to Master Gotama, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus (bhikkhusaṅgha). May Master Gotama remember us as lay followers (upāsaka) who have gone for refuge from this day forth, for as long as life lasts."
